In 1978, American curator and gallerist Walter Hopps opened 5 floors of blank walls to the city, inviting thousands of artists he believed were hiding there to come and hang their work in any and all parts of the gallery over 36 hours. It was fully inclusive – the only requirement was that the art had to fit through the door.

Nearly 50 years later, we’re launching it in London.

We believe that anyone can be an artist and deserves to have their art shown. This project will provide this opportunity to anyone who comes, and give them the power to not only control the way it is displayed, but will also provide support on how to install their work, write interpretation, and more. Each work that comes through the door will be treated with equal care and passion.

The first 36 Hours project will be taking place at Lewisham Arthouse May 28th – June 8th 2026 as part of the Brockley Max festival.

36 Hours is a not for profit, community project which relies on the kindness of donors in order to function. If you would like to support, please feel donate to our GoFundMe – even if its just £1 – or follow us on social media to share our work!
