In 1978, American curator and gallerist Walter Hopps opened five floors of blank walls to the city, inviting thousands of artists he believed were hiding there to come and hang their work in any and all parts of the gallery over 36 hours. It was fully inclusive – the only requirement was that the art had to fit through the door.
Nearly 50 years later, we launched it in London.
Over three days in May 2026, we accepted art from any artist who came through the door and found a place for it on the walls of Lewisham Arthouse. We’re proud to have made an exhibition for everyone and while doing so enjoyed the surprise of each new piece.
The exhibition showed at Lewisham Arthouse 1-6 June 2026 as part of Brockley Max’s 25th anniversary festival.
